American short story writer O.Henry is best known for his wit, his wordplay, his warm characterizations that bring people to life, and his surprise endings. In this short story you'll find them all as the man who came in second wonders where he went wrong as he attends the wedding of the woman he had recently loved...and lost. We join him in his apartment in the hours after the wedding talking to the brother of the bride and wondering just what he had done to fall out of favor with her. The cactus which she had asked to be delivered to his room in the days prior to the wedding holds the clue.
