The story of Betsy Ross, who, upon the request of George Washington, sewed America's Stars and Stripes at her small Philadelphia shop. Her life had not been an easy one, losing two husbands, and working to pay the bills in her small shop. When fate intervened, in the form of a request to sew a flag pattern that she was handed, her ingenuity and quick assurance secured her a place in American history. Her grandson William Canby's story, told 100 years after the event, survives as the only documented proof of her contribution, but it has been accepted as correct by most people all these years. Credits: Johnny Cash, The Rugged Old Flag. John Wayne: The Pledge of Allegiance (at end).
